Hopelink hosts events each year that involve the community in our
efforts to promote self-sufficiency and change lives in North and East
King County.

Advocate and Actor Edward James Olmos to Keynote at the 13th Annual Hopelink Annual Luncheon on Monday, October 20

The Emmy-winning and Oscar nominated actor will speak at Hopelink's 13th annual Reaching Out Luncheon at Bellevue's Meydenbauer Center. In 1988, Olmos received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Jaime Escalante, the eccentric but dedicated math teacher, in Stand And Deliver, which he also produced. Olmos also won an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award for his portrayal of Lt. Castillo on the popular television series Miami Vice. Olmos also makes time to participate in many humanitarian efforts. He is a US Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF, and a national spokesperson for organizations such as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. He has worked with David Rockefeller of the Rockefeller Foundation, and serves on the boards of many groups and organizations.

Hopelink is a partner in the United Way of King County IDA Collaborative, which helps people move out of poverty through economic empowerment and asset development. IDAs are matched savings accounts for specific asset goals. The savings are matched by public and private sources at a ratio of 3:1. "The IDA program is for working people with limited resources who are unable to save enough by themselves to invest in personal assets but are willing to save to realize their dreams. Hopelink will have three orientations for learning about the program:- Wednesday, September 10*, 6:30-8:30pm at the Hopelink Bellevue Center, 14812 Main St., Bellevue, WA 98007

- Celebrate the start of the school year at our Fiesta in Carnation!
This free event will give students, tutors, and community members an opportunity to sign up for ESL classes and hear about other Hopelink services. More importantly, we will be enjoying good food provided by Ixtapa Mexican Restaurant while getting to know our fellow community members! For the children there will be a piƱata, games with prizes and face painting!- Wednesday, October 1

- New Volunteer Orientation (ongoing): Volunteer orientations are held twice a month at several locations.
Volunteers can learn about opportunities to help Hopelink clients as basic literacy tutors, English as a Second Language group leaders, general education and computer tutors, and lifelong learning teachers.
